Opening Doors to Innovation: Verizon Inspires the Next Generation

When Verizon launched an initiative encouraging employees to volunteer in their communities, Melody Peaten was eager to get involved. As a manager in Research & Planning, she knew she wanted to make a difference—especially for young people—but wasn’t sure where to begin.

After joining Verizon’s volunteer committee, Melody was tasked with organizing a meaningful service opportunity. Searching for a nonprofit dedicated to helping students succeed, she discovered Think Big for Kids.

It quickly became clear that the partnership was a perfect fit.

One of Think Big’s signature Career Exploration experiences is introducing students to workplaces they might never otherwise have the opportunity to visit. Together, Verizon and Think Big created a behind-the-scenes experience that showcased the many career paths available within one of the world’s leading technology companies.

For many students, the visit transformed the way they think about Verizon.

Beyond wireless service, students explored the company’s Innovation Lab, where they experienced emerging technologies including virtual reality, real-time language translation, Smart City technology, robotics, and the Emergency Response Operations Center that helps keep communities connected during times of crisis. Each stop demonstrated how technology is solving real-world problems and creating careers that many students had never imagined.

“The students had a real eye-opening experience,” said Samantha Jimenez, Program Director at SACC/Camp East Orange YMCA. “They had never been exposed to the high-tech side of Verizon or the limitless possibilities it offers. It was an incredible day for everyone.”

The experience didn’t end with technology demonstrations. Students also participated in a career panel with Verizon professionals, asking thoughtful questions about education, internships, career pathways, and what it takes to succeed in the technology industry. By hearing firsthand stories from employees with diverse backgrounds, students saw that successful careers are built through curiosity, perseverance, and opportunity.

The visit was equally meaningful for Verizon employees.

What began as a volunteer event quickly became an inspiring exchange. In one memorable moment, a Verizon Senior Vice President stepped away from a leadership meeting intending to spend just a few minutes with the students. Instead, he stayed for the remainder of the program, captivated by their enthusiasm, curiosity, and thoughtful questions.

Experiences like this are at the heart of Think Big for Kids’ Career Exploration program. By connecting students with industry leaders and exposing them to careers they may never have considered, we help young people see new possibilities for their futures.

We are grateful to Verizon and its dedicated volunteers for investing their time, expertise, and passion in the next generation. Together, we’re opening doors, expanding horizons, and helping students discover careers they never knew were possible.
